Home > About the GLS > GLS Departments > Office of Fair Trading Office of Fair Trading “Making markets work well for consumers” The Office of Fair Trading is a non-ministerial Government Department, headed by the Board of the OFT (made up of the Chairman, the Chief Executive and executive and non-executive directors). It is the primary competition and consumer agency in the U.K. Purpose Its purpose is to help markets work well for consumers. The OFT has been given a wide range of enhanced duties and powers in the last decade. Its lawyers play key roles in exercising those duties and powers. The work of the office is intellectually challenging and provides significant job satisfaction. Work of the legal team The lawyers work in many different areas and groups in the Office: providing advice on competition and consumer law and on the Offices market sector studies, in the Cartels and Mergers groups, and in the General Counsel's office (made up by the Litigation Unit and the Adjudication Unit - an in-house tribunal for consumer credit and estate agents cases; the General Counsel also gives general public law advice to the Office).
