Working for the Public

Government lawyers are committed to working in the public interest – making a positive contribution to the lives of large sections of people through the laws they help shape or enforce. The work is uniquely rewarding and frequently high profile. A GLS career also appeals to lawyers with an interest in how the law interacts with politics and how this affects the community. It attracts barristers and solicitors who can see the big picture as well as how the law affects individuals.

Along with the rest of the Civil Service, GLS lawyers have a unique constitutional role in helping the Government formulate policies, implement decisions and administer public services. This requires integrity, honesty, impartiality and objectivity. In particular, GLS lawyers must be prepared to advise on the public sector’s duty to comply with the law, including international law and treaty obligations, and to uphold the administration of justice.
