civil servants enjoy a choice of pension arrangements as part of their overall remuneration package. Most new permanent staff may join premium, the final salary pension scheme with a comparatively low contribution rate of 3.5%, or they may open a partnership pension account - a stakeholder pension where they can choose whether or not they wish to contribute. Both schemes benefit from substantial employer contributions.
