Salary & Benefits

Salary

It is a fact of Civil Service life that different government organisations have different pay scales. This applies to both lawyers and legal trainees in the same way as it applies to all other civil servants.

Currently, 1st year legal trainees’ salary is in the range of £23,280 to £25,600. The second year salary range is £24,850 to £27,335. On qualification, your pay will be in the region of £32,000 to £35,000 pa.

Payment of course Fees

The GLS will pay your Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Vocational Course (BVC) fees in full provided you have not yet started the course. Where the course has begun, the GLS will pay your fees for the remainder. We cannot make any retrospective payments to candidates who have successfully completed their courses. We have no preference which Law or Bar School you attend. We will also provide you with a grant of about £5,400 - £7,600 for the vocational year.

Funding may be available for the GDL and, if you are successful in your application, you should ask the department which makes you an offer about this.
