Vacation Placement Scheme

Eligibility

To apply for a place on the Vacation Placement Scheme you must meet three criteria;

- Nationality criterion;

- Degree criterion and;

- Academic status

If you do not meet any of these criteria, you will not be eligible to apply.

Nationality Criterion

The GLS is part of the wider Civil Service and its nationality rules apply.

You must be a UK national, a Commonwealth or Irish national, a British Protected Person, a national of the European Economic Area (EEA) or a Swiss national. Turkish nationals who meet certain qualifying conditions will also be eligible to apply. Qualifying family members of EEA or Swiss nationals or Turkish nationals may also be eligible to apply.

Please note that it is possible to meet the Civil Service nationality requirements and still not be legally entitled to live and work in the UK. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) operates a points-based immigration system (http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk) which applies to citizens from outside the EEA, Switzerland and Turkey. It is your responsibility to check whether this policy applies to you.

Checks will be undertaken to verify your nationality and immigration status before any appointment will be confirmed.

Degree Criterion

You must have, or be predicted to obtain a minimum 2:1 in your first degree discipline.

Please note that candidates without a 2.1 degree may still be considered if they can provide acceptable written evidence from their university/exam board to show that there were mitigating circumstances (eg. illness or bereavement) which resulted in the lower classification of degree. A mitigating circumstances form will be issued to candidates to whom this is relevant.

Academic Status

This is the term used to refer to the stage that you have reached in your academic studies i.e. first year, last year etc.

Most departments will specify that applicants must meet the 'standard' criterion outlined below. Please note that some departments will have a different criterion. Details on the academic status required by all departments will be provided when the application process opens.

Standard Criterion

Candidates studying law cannot apply any earlier than the penultimate year of their degree. Candidates studying a non law degree cannot apply any earlier than their final year. Please note that Scots law students should apply in their final year of study.

Law and non law graduates are also welcome to apply.
