Vacation Placement Scheme

Name: Martin
Department: The Department for Work and Pensions/Health

What did you do during your placement?

I went to the Court of Appeal and Upper Tribunal a number of times and the Houses of Parliament twice. Whilst in the office, I carried out a number of tasks including conducting case summaries and compiling data on legislative changes that were about to be passed.

What did you learn during your placement?

I learnt that the department’s legal team performs a huge range of work, from prosecuting those who make fraudulent social security claims to creating new legislation on a range of health and social matters. Seeing the legal team’s involvement in policy and prosecutions has been fascinating.

The placement gave me a valuable insight into the interaction between lawyers and policy makers in government departments and particularly the work performed by GLS lawyers as legislation passes through the parliamentary system.

What did you most enjoy?

I particularly enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere. All members of the department I met were friendly and took time to give me useful advice and answer all the questions I threw at them.
