Vacation Placement Scheme

Name: Sarah
Department: Ministry of Defence

.

What did you do during your placement?

I worked with several teams within the MOD legal division. I attended a discrimination law working group meeting; a public inquiry and a Court of Appeal case which included a pre-court hearing with counsel.

What did you learn during your placement?

I gained an insight into the scope and the large variety of legal issues that government lawyers undertake. It soon became apparent how socially and politically important the work of the GLS is and how some cases can become very high profile.

What did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed following the Court of Appeal case over several days of the placement. Reading the papers, attending conference with Counsel and observing at the Court of Appeal allowed me to gain a real insight into all the processes involved in working on a case. I also gained an insight into dealing with the media since the case I was involved in became headline news.
