Vacation Placement Scheme
You can gain an insight into the GLS’ unique
perspective of law by applying for a place on our summer Vacation Placement
Scheme. If you’re successful in your application, you’ll spend
your time working alongside lawyers and trainees in the Department of
your choice.
Please note that success in obtaining a GLS vacation placement does not
guarantee that you will be short-listed for a GLS Legal Trainee post (nor
is it necessary to have a placement to be eligible for a trainee place).
The Vacation Placement Scheme and the Legal Trainee Scheme are two distinct
competitions and you will need to make a separate application for a position
on each.

Scheme, please see below or download our Vacation

Which Departments take part in the Scheme?
Departments participating in the 2009 Vacation
Placement Scheme will be announced in early 2009.
The Departments listed below offered placements in the 2008 campaign;
Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform
Department for Communities and Local Government
Department for Transport
Department for Work and Pensions / Department for Health
HM Revenue and Customs
Health and Safety Executive
Ministry of Defence
Office of Fair Trading
Serious Fraud Office

Where and when does
the Vacation Placement Scheme take place?
Placements take place in the summer months between June and September
and the majority of placements are based in London.
How many places are there?
In 2008, Departments offered a total of 58 placements.
Who can apply for a place?
Placements are specifically targeted at those
who intend and are eligible to apply, in the same year, to the GLS Legal
Trainee Scheme.
Academic Requirements
In order to be eligible to apply you must be in, or have completed, the
penultimate year of a law degree or the final year of a non-law degree.
Scots law students should apply in their final year. Those who have successfully
completed their degree are, of course, also eligible.
You should possess, or be expected by your university to achieve an upper
second class degree or above in your first degree discipline, which need
not necessarily be in law.
Nationality Requirements
The GLS is part of the wider Civil Service and therefore the general Civil
Service nationality rules apply. Candidates must be UK or Commonwealth
citizens or nationals from the European Economic Area (EEA). Certain non-EEA
family members of EEA nationals may also be eligible for appointment.
If relevant, applicants must hold an appropriate work permit. If you are
on a student visa and would like to apply, you will need to arrange a
work permit before applying.
Will I get any financial support?
Successful candidates receive an allowance to
cover expenses (usually between £150 and £200 per week).
What's the application process?
On the application form, you will be asked to
select from one of the participating Departments. That Department will
consider your application.
If you are successful in your application, you will be put in touch with
a member of your chosen Department to discuss timing and other arrangements.
Departments may occasionally interview shortlisted candidates, but generally
selection is made on the strength of the application alone.
